Multi-Factor Authentication Setup

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a method of logging into your account using your Union username/password and confirming the login through an app on your smartphone. MFA provides an additional layer of security so that even if someone steals your password they would not be able to log in as you.

Please complete the setup steps below to add (MFA) to your account. 

You will use the Authenticator app on your smartphone to confirm your login to Office 365. 

Setup Steps: Smartphone Only Method

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the app store of your smartphone.


  2. Once installed open the application.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the needed permissions for your account including notifications.


  4. After giving all the needed permissions to the app got to https://aka.ms/MFASetup and sign in with your Union credentials.
    You will be prompted for additional information. 

    Select "Next."

  5. You will prompt to download the app. (Since you have already installed it select "Next")


  6. Select the link that reads "Pair your account to the app by clicking this link."

    The app will then be opened, and your account will be added to it.
    After it has been added go back to your web browser or hit back on your phone.
  7. Then select "Next" you will then be prompted to send a notification to your device to be approved.

    Once you have approved the notification it will display that it has been successful.

  8. Confirm your identity via text or phone call.

    Once you have received your code or phone call verified proceed to the next step


  9. Provide a name for your password (This is just to name the account)


  10. You will be provided with an App Password that you should make a note of. (This is not your Union login password)
    Then select "Done"
  11. You will see a summary of your MFA, select "Done"
  12. You have completed the setup for your account!!!


Setup Steps: Smartphone + PC Method (Recommended)

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the app store of your smartphone.

  2. Once installed open the application.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions and add the needed permissions for your account.


  4. Select Work or school account from the account type menu.

  5. Prepare your mobile device to scan a QR code on the next screen as shown below and go to the following link using a computer: https://aka.ms/MFASetup.


  6. When signing into the account you will be prompted to provide additional information, select next.


  7. Go through the following prompts and click next

    Make sure you allow notifications.              
  8. Scan your QR Code

    (If you need another QR Code simply hit "Back" and then "Next" to generate a new one if the first attempt fails)

  9. Once you scan the QR Code your account will be added to the app on your smartphone.

  10. Follow the instructions to test the app and make sure it is working.

    You should receive a notification on your smartphone to confirm that it's you trying to login to the account, select "Approve"


  11. Confirm your identity via text or phone call.

  12. Provide a name for your password (This is just to name the account)

    Then select "Done"


  14. You will see a summary of your MFA, select "Done"
